![]() ![]() Earliest they can kill it without Tron is turn 5. He is good against Tron cause u have landdestruction early and they can't handle him without Tron. Now I feel I can easily win that matchup, due to the "main" Sideboardhate. He is not a dead card, he just makes Mardus lackluster lategame better than Junds lategame.(in my experience) And Mardu always was the better Mardu. They have Thalia already on board and I don't have creature removal in hand? I will not play him at all and cycle him with seasoned Pyro or discard him to Lili or Collective Brutality. Maybe they have a bolt, I won't grab Liquimetal against red anyways, why would i? It's gotten slower so Karn as a value engine is GOOD. But not as fast as it was during Phoenix. If you want to be able to tutor for a load of random hate pieces, use whir of invention and play Urza. Again, this comes from experience playing Karn. ![]() Karn is a good card, but mardu midrange isn’t the deck for him. The only exception here is bridge because it can shut down games but even then you have to not be dead AND they have to not have removal for bridge or you just took so many turns off for nothing. You just spent two turns and 4+ mana getting a pithing needle. You grab a hate piece and again your Karn will likely die. Or your opponent doesn’t care about you turn 5 destroying one land and they just kill you. Your liquimetal is useless and you just timewalked your opponent. Bolt, bloodbraid, trophy, any creature on board and its dead. You grab liquimetal and your Karn definitely doesn’t survive. Assuming you’re not just dead then two things happen: You just tapped out to do nothing except grab a hate piece. You don’t have big scary things to get and play unreasonably early like Wurmcoil or Titan. You don’t run ramp or big mana so you’re playing Karn turn 4. Also you can’t run chalice and you can’t run bigger threats. You have the tools in mardu to deal with stuff without having to loosely rely on bridge or needle being good and having those average cards at 4+x mana over two turns is bad. Only using Karn to get an average hate piece on turn 5 is super average. Karn works in the decks it works in because those decks rely on prison style pieces to shut the opponent up for a enough time for their game plan to work, or they can use him to get massive threats like Sundering Titan or Wurmcoil or Mindslaver. If you go thoughtseize thoughtseize thoughtseize removal into Karn then yeah sure he’s ok but any other threatening four drop like Chandra is better here in that style of deck. Karn is good if you’re fast, your opponent has nothing or your opponent is prisoned out of the game. Modern is faster than that and you’re just dead. I’ve played with Karn nonstop since his release and I can categorically tell you that he is not to be used as a value engine to turn 5 a hate piece that doesn’t matter because it’s turn 5 and you didn’t do anything turn 4.
